I haven’t read a book by Wendelin Van Draanen, but when I heard that Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men) directed this adaptation, I was curious to see it.
The story is almost similar to the book but in a different timeline (the movie takes place in the late 50s and the early 60s while the book takes place in the early 2000s). In addition, the characters are natural and Rob Reiner’s style is better than his previous works.
At first, Juli is “one of the boys” as all she ever wants is a first kiss while Bryce plays the opposite. However, their roles switch places as the movie progresses. Did I mention that the Baker family owns a chicken farm? I personally hate Bryce’s father. He’s a fucking moron.
This is a “guilty pleasure” for pre-teens, I tell you.
